Let's Stir Things Up!

“...and let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works.” Hebrews 10:24

What could the writer of Hebrews possibly mean by “stir up?” The Greek word used here, paroxusmos, actually means to “provoke unto.” I’d like to see some ideas as to what we, as believers, should be doing in order to obey this commandment. Be sure to check the context of the verse (use proper hermeneutics).

In the first part of verse 25 it says "not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together". I think that it means that we should fellowship with fellow believers and help each other with our problems. When we do this, "love and good works" will come out. "Stir up" here means: to arouse, or bring about.

So, if a church isn't doing anything that would be classified as "good works", whose responsibity/fault is it? The pastor's? Isn't that what we pay him for?

we pay the pastor so that he can have something to live off of. if we didnt pay him, he would have to have a second job, which would take away from time that could be spent studying God's Word. The pastor could be at fault for preaching false doctrine, but it is most likely the church itself who is at fault. when the church assembles regularly with things like Bible studies they can help each other with things wrong in their lives and encourage each other to do the good works. For those that are saved. the Holy Spirit will convict them and they will hopefully see where they are goin wrong and change it. If it gets to the point where a church isnt doing "anything" that would be calssified as good works, you have a major problem.

Don't most Christian churches follow the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?"

How could this be a potential problem in obeying this command in Hebrews? Should we live by the saying, "If it ain't broke, break it?"
